UL ECOLOGO

UL Solutions (formerly TerraChoice, originally Environment Canada) / Originated in Canada, now recognized across North America

Established: Established in June 1988 (as the Environmental Choice Program)

Overview

The certification now known as UL ECOLOGO originated from the "Environmental Choice Program," established in 1988 by Environment Canada, and is considered North America's first ecolabelling program. In 1995, operation of the program was licensed to the private company TerraChoice, driving its international expansion; in 2010, UL (Underwriters Laboratories) acquired TerraChoice, and the program is now operated as part of UL Solutions. It is ISO 14024 (Type I) compliant and has been endorsed by the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN). Certification criteria are designed to recognize only the top 20% of performers in each category, and the program has certified over 7,000 products across more than 120 categories. Many of Canada's Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are also certified under this label.
