NF Environnement

AFNOR Certification (certification division of the French standards association) / France

Established: Established in 1991

Overview

NF Environnement is France's national environmental certification mark, established in 1991 and issued by AFNOR Certification (the certification division of the French standardization association). It is a voluntary product and service certification scheme that requires meeting both reduced environmental impact across the life cycle and quality-of-use standards. It covers roughly 40 to 50 product and service categories, including electrical appliances (televisions, heat pumps, refrigerators, washing machines), DIY products (flooring, paint, adhesives), furniture, cleaning products, and tourism facilities. In France, NF Environnement and the EU Ecolabel (for which AFNOR Certification also serves as the issuing body) are recognized as the country's two official ecolabels.

Timeline

  • 1991: NF Environnement established
  • 1992: EU Ecolabel established by the European Commission (AFNOR Certification also serves as the issuing body in France)
  • Present: Approximately 40–50 product and service categories are covered; 640 companies in France hold one of the two labels (518 EU Ecolabel, 122 NF Environnement, per Ecolabels.fr)
  • Business Impact

For businesses targeting the French domestic market, NF Environnement and the EU Ecolabel are the two officially recognized environmental certifications in France, with particular prominence in electrical appliances, DIY products, and tourism facilities. Since both labels are issued through the same body (AFNOR Certification), businesses can choose between domestic-focused (NF Environnement) or pan-European (EU Ecolabel) certification, or obtain both.
