Hong Kong Green Label Scheme (HKGLS)

Green Council (nonprofit organization) / Hong Kong

Established: Launched in December 2000

Overview

The Hong Kong Green Label Scheme (HKGLS) is an independent, voluntary certification scheme for environmentally preferable products, launched in December 2000 by the Green Council. Like most ecolabelling programs, it is an ISO 14024 Type I label requiring third-party certification and life-cycle consideration. Its criteria draw on international precedents and are benchmarked against well-established ecolabels to ensure credibility. It covers building materials, cleaning products, electronics, healthcare equipment and services, appliances, and machinery, with 62 product criteria issued and over 100 certified products. It is also linked to other Hong Kong schemes—for example, the use of HKGLS-certified products contributes to bonus credits under BEAM Plus, Hong Kong's green building rating system for existing buildings.
