SMK (Stichting Milieukeur) / Netherlands

Established: Established in 1992

Overview

Milieukeur is the Dutch national environmental quality label, managed by the foundation SMK (Stichting Milieukeur), established in 1992 under the initiative of the former Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. As an ISO 14024-compliant Type I ecolabel, it certifies non-food products and services based on life-cycle criteria. SMK has also been designated by the Dutch government as the Competent Body for the EU Ecolabel in the Netherlands, handling both schemes through the same organization. Covered categories are largely B2B-oriented, including concrete products, fire extinguishers, healthcare, green electricity, and car-wash products.

  • From establishment: SMK also designated as the Competent Body for the EU Ecolabel in the Netherlands

  • Business Impact

For businesses operating B2B in the Netherlands—particularly in concrete products, fire extinguishers, healthcare, and green electricity—Milieukeur certification is sometimes a procurement requirement. Since SMK also serves as the Dutch Competent Body for the EU Ecolabel, it functions as a practical single point of contact for companies seeking EU Ecolabel certification for the Dutch market.
