Source:French Ministry of Ecological Transition
On 28 August 2026, France's Ministry of Ecological Transition announced that the order (arrêté) setting a malus (environmental penalty) targeting ultra-fast fashion had been published in the Journal Officiel. The arrêté entered into force on 1 September 2026.
According to the announcement, the malus can reach up to 50% of the product price, within a ceiling of €12 in 2026 and €19.50 in 2030. The announcement describes the products concerned as those with a very weak incentive to repair, sold by brands offering a very wide range of products. It states that the measure rests on a law to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry.
