[Corporate Strategy] Brazilian Court Suspends Environmental Licences for Sigma Lithium's Mine — Environmental Permitting Becomes a Supply Risk for EV Critical Minerals

On 4 September 2026, a Brazilian court ordered the suspension of the environmental licences and mining activities at the Grota do Cirilo lithium mine operated by Canadian miner Sigma Lithium in the state of Minas Gerais. The lawsuit was brought by the federation of Quilombola communities of Minas Gerais (traditional Afro-Brazilian communities descended from people who escaped slavery), and points to the need for additional licensing procedures and prior consultation in connection with the mine's development.
Sigma Lithium has stated that it has not received formal notification and that operations are continuing for now, and has said it will take legal action in response. The case does not amount to a definitive finding of environmental violations or the permanent closure of the mine, but it highlights the legal vulnerability of environmental permits and community consent in the supply chain for EV critical minerals.
In lithium mining and refining, which supply the core material for EV batteries, the temporary suspension of environmental licences and litigation translate directly into raw material procurement delays and price volatility risks for automakers and battery suppliers.
Editor's View
In securing critical mineral supply chains, a structure is becoming apparent in which not only resource availability and refining costs but also the stability of environmental permits and community consent at the mining site can become a critical bottleneck. As supply chain due diligence is strengthened under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), the CSDDD and the Battery Regulation, prior scrutiny of first-tier suppliers' ability to maintain permits and of their ESG risks is also becoming a decisive factor in supply continuity for downstream companies.
