[Regulatory Update] China's RoHS regime adds four phthalates to restricted substances — new mandatory national standard applies from August 2027

China's regulation of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products has added four phthalates — DBP, DIBP, BBP and DEHP — to its list of restricted substances. Since 1 January 2026, the amended content of GB/T 26572-2011 has been reflected in conformity assessment.
In addition, the mandatory national standard GB 26572-2025 was promulgated in August 2025. This standard will take effect on 1 August 2027 and is intended to fully replace the former GB/T 26572-2011. From 1 January 2026 to 31 July 2027, conformity assessment may be carried out under either GB/T 26572-2011 (including Amendment No. 1) or GB 26572-2025; from 1 August 2027, it must be carried out under GB 26572-2025.
Editor's View
China RoHS covers substances similar to those under EU RoHS, but companies need to design their compliance around China's own combination of standards and conformity-assessment systems. Electrical and electronics manufacturers need to manage not only content information for the four substances but also the timing of the switchover in conformity-assessment documentation, certification and test data for products destined for the Chinese market; even under the same label of "RoHS," compliance only becomes complete once companies address not just the substance list but also the standards and conformity-assessment regime behind it.
