China Plastic Recycling Standards for Automotive Products
ENFORCEMENT TIMELINE
Applying from January 1, 2025
Overview
This regulation sets plastic recycling standards aimed at accelerating the automotive industry's transition to a circular economy in China. It requires automakers and parts suppliers to adopt Design for Recycling (DfR) from the vehicle design stage, mandates identification and labeling of plastic materials, and calls for higher use rates of recycled materials. Aimed at reducing environmental impact and maximizing resource efficiency, it sets strict technical requirements for ease of dismantling and maintaining material purity when vehicles are scrapped. It applies to all passenger and commercial vehicles sold in the Chinese market and is a significant standard forcing an overhaul of plastic management across the entire supply chain.
Enforcement Timeline
- December 2024: Final public comment period on the draft standard concluded and implementing rules were finalized.
- June 2025: Introduction of a reporting system for automakers on actual plastic usage.
- January 2026: Recommended standards for recycled-plastic content ratios began applying to new vehicle models.
- January 2027: Mandatory labeling of plastic components in vehicles (ISO-compliant identification marks) took effect.
- January 2030: Legally mandatory recycled-plastic usage rates began applying across all vehicle categories.
Business Impact
Manufacturers producing automotive parts in China need to shift sourcing to suppliers with strong recyclability credentials and prepare recyclability assessment reports for each vehicle.
