Made Green in Italy

Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) / Italy

Established: Establishment year requires further confirmation (the scheme is rolled out category by category, with no single nationwide launch date)

Overview

Made Green in Italy (MGI) is a national certification scheme operated by Italy's Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE). Unlike other national ecolabels, it uniquely integrates elements of both Type I (third-party certification limited to top-performing products, per ISO 14024) and Type III (environmental footprint disclosure, per ISO 14025 and the Product Environmental Footprint [PEF] methodology). Eligibility is limited to products qualifying as "Made in Italy" under EU customs rules of origin (the final substantial transformation must occur in Italy), and only categories with approved Product Category Rules (PCR) are eligible. Certified products calculate their environmental footprint using the PEF methodology and are classified into three performance tiers (A, B, C).

Timeline

  • The scheme is rolled out category by category as Product Category Rules (PCR) are approved, rather than through a single nationwide launch date, and continues to expand on an ongoing basis
  • Business Impact

As a means of communicating the environmental credentials of products and services that can claim "Made in Italy" status, the scheme is available for corporate green marketing. While sometimes compared to established Type I labels such as Germany's Blue Angel, its distinguishing feature is the quantitative environmental footprint disclosure based on the PEF methodology.
