The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has had its application schedule and certain practical requirements adjusted through amendments in 2024 and 2025. Under the European Commission's current explanation, application to large and medium operators begins on 30 December 2026, and application to general micro and small operators begins on 30 June 2027. For micro and small operators previously covered by the EU Timber Regulation, the application date is 30 December 2026. At the heart of the EUDR is a requirement for due diligence on the origin of covered commodities, with the necessary information submitted through an information system.

Under the EUDR, it is important for companies importing or selling covered commodities to obtain information on the origin of raw materials and their land and production location from across the supply chain. Companies handling covered commodities such as natural rubber, wood, paper, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soya and cattle need to manage origin data and due-diligence information on an ongoing basis, rather than relying on simple supplier confirmation; the real challenge is not whether covered raw materials are used, but building the capability to trace, as company data, where those raw materials actually come from.
