[Regulatory Update] EU Battery Regulation: digital battery passport mandatory from 18 February 2027 — moving to digital management of battery lifecycle information

Under Article 77 of the EU Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542), LMT batteries, industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh, and EV batteries will be required to hold an electronic Battery Passport from 18 February 2027. The passport is to include not only information about the battery model but also information specific to individual batteries and information generated during use. As of March 2026, responses to questions in the European Parliament confirmed that implementation elements such as the registry, standardisation and service providers are still being put in place ahead of the 2027 start of the obligation.

The Battery Passport manages information about batteries not as a one-off product label but as a digital information structure that runs across the supply chain and the battery's lifecycle. Not only battery manufacturers but also cell, materials, component and recycling businesses will need the capability to link information at both the model and individual-unit level; this is a clear example of environmental regulation moving from "what must be displayed on a product" to "how product data is connected."
