[Regulatory Update] EU CLP: transition period for existing substances under new hazard classes ends 1 May 2026 — SDS and label updates move into full swing
Source:European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/707 added new hazard classes to the CLP Regulation covering endocrine disruption and PBT/vPvB and PMT/vPvM properties. The transition periods differ between substances newly placed on the market and existing substances, and 1 May 2026 is the key cut-off date for existing substances.
From 1 May 2026, existing substances falling within scope must also be classified and labelled with reference to the new hazard classes, so updating SDSs and labels is not a discretionary improvement but becomes part of the practical work of CLP compliance.

In chemicals regulation, adding a new hazard class does not affect only the substance itself — it has a knock-on effect on the SDSs and labels of products that use that substance. Not only chemical manufacturers but manufacturers that use chemicals as raw materials or components will need to check for updates to the SDS information they receive from suppliers; a change in chemicals regulation moves not only product design but also the "regulatory data" exchanged between companies.
