[Supply Chain] Sony and Mitsubishi Corporation Build Global Supply Chain for Renewable Plastics Using Biomass-Derived Feedstock

Source:Sony Corporation / Mitsubishi Corporation
Sony, together with Mitsubishi Corporation, has advanced the "Creating NEW from reNEWable materials" project, visualising a supply chain from biomass-derived feedstock through to finished products. According to Sony's published materials, the initiative is described as involving the cooperation of 13 companies, including feedstock and chemical manufacturers. The supply chain adopts a mass balance approach, allocating renewable attributes to products in proportion to the amount of biomass-derived feedstock used as input. For the WF-1000XM6, launched in 2026, renewable material attributes have been allocated to around 25% of total plastic used.
Editor's View

For high-performance electrical and electronic products, it can be difficult to simply replace conventional plastics with recycled materials owing to performance requirements. Rather than wholesale substitution of the feedstock itself, allocating environmental value to products through mass balance and supply-chain-wide attribute management becomes an option, and this case is more accurately read not as "physical substitution with recycled plastic" but as an example in which managing feedstock attributes and supply chain data made it possible to allocate environmental attributes to high-performance products.

JP Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics

The Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics (often called the Plastic Resource Circulation Act or "Plashin-ho") aims to promote plastic resource circulation across the entire lifecycle—from product design, manufacturing, and sales to waste management. It mandates design guidelines for plastic products, obligates specific businesses to reduce single-use plastics, and promotes voluntary collection and recycling systems.
