[Regulatory Update] EU reassigns RoHS scientific and technical tasks to ECHA — new regime for exemption and restricted-substance assessment applies from August 2027

Source:Official Journal of the European Union / ECHA
The EU has introduced changes reassigning scientific and technical tasks related to the RoHS Directive to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), under Directive (EU) 2025/2456. The Directive was published in the Official Journal in December 2025 and entered into force in January 2026. The actual amended provisions, however, apply from 13 August 2027. ECHA's database covering RoHS exemptions has also been put in place, and current exemption information can now be checked there.
Editor's View

For companies complying with RoHS, what matters is not only the substances covered by the restrictions but the fact that the scientific assessment process itself — behind the maintenance and renewal of exemptions and the consideration of new restrictions — is changing. Electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers and component makers need to keep ongoing track of the deadlines, applications and availability of alternative technologies for the RoHS exemptions they currently rely on; RoHS compliance is evolving from managing a "list of banned substances" into tracking the scientific basis and deadlines of exemptions.
