[Corporate Strategy] Brother Begins Remanufacturing Printer Drum Units in Europe

Source:Brother Industries, Ltd. (official news release, 24 August 2026)
On 24 August 2026, Brother Industries announced that it had begun remanufacturing drum units used in printers and multifunction devices at its production site in Slovakia, Brother Industries (Slovakia) s.r.o. Since July 2026, used drum units collected from customers have been cleaned, fitted with replacement parts and put through quality inspections before being put back into use. The company already remanufactures toner and ink cartridges, and the drum unit programme extends its remanufacturing to key imaging components. Brother positions the initiative as part of its corporate activities on resource circulation, and has also set a target of reducing the absolute amount of virgin materials used in its products by 25% by FY2030 compared with FY2022.
Editor's View

This initiative is a corporate example showing that resource circulation for printers and multifunction devices is expanding beyond material recycling of end-of-life products to the stage of collecting, remanufacturing and reintroducing the components themselves. In particular, by building collection, remanufacturing and reintroduction into its own production network, Brother offers a concrete example of integrating remanufacturing into the product life cycle. It is also notable that Brother itself does not describe the initiative as a response to EU regulation, but positions it as part of its own efforts towards resource circulation and waste reduction.
