EU Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC)
ENFORCEMENT TIMELINE
In force since 2009; being phased out and replaced as the ESPR takes over
Overview
This is the historic framework directive that required energy efficiency and energy-saving compliance labeling (such as the CE mark) for energy-related products (ErP). With the adoption of the newer ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation), this directive is being progressively superseded as the overarching framework. However, the individual product-specific implementing regulations currently in force under it (covering air conditioners, lighting, smartphones, and other categories) continue to remain valid under the Ecodesign Directive until they are replaced by new delegated acts under the ESPR.
Enforcement Timeline
2009: The amended Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC) enters into force.
2024: The ESPR enters into force as the new overarching framework.
Going forward: Existing individual implementing regulations (organized by product "lot") remain in effect in parallel until each is fully transitioned to an ESPR delegated act.

Business Impact
Manufacturers of covered equipment must continue to maintain compliance with the individual regulations under the Ecodesign Directive, including CE marking requirements, for as long as those regulations remain in force.
